What is Rigid Insulation?
Rigid insulation is a form of insulation made from fibrous materials.
Rigid insulation is commonly used in tight spaces, where there is a need to pack the highest insulating capacity into a small area.
Other common uses for rigid insulation include:
- On exterior walls between the roof and foundation
- Directly on top of, or underneath, roof sheathing
- As panels secured in place against unfinished interior walls
However, rigid insulation can be used virtually anywhere from the roof down, for your home or commercial building, including on walls, ceilings and floors.
What are the Benefits?
As well as being an extremely efficient form of insulation, rigid panel insulation is extremely cost effective.
Rigid insulation offers great thermal performance, is lightweight and water resistant and will not sag or attract mildew.
Not only that, but rigid insulation, also has a much higher R-value per inch than other types of common insulation like roll insulation such as batts, or loose-fill insulation.Rigid insulation typically has an R-value of around 8, compared with an R-value of 3 or 4 for the other types of insulation mentioned.

Cool Foil rigid insulation has been specially designed for Australian conditions, and utilises Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) beads which have been bonded in a specific way to avoid the conduction of thermal energy. Our rigid insulation comes in two different sheet sizes, and each sheet has also been fitted with high-grade reflective foil.
